MÔR HAFREN LODGE NO.7194 "LODGE OF THE SEVERN SEA"

Warrant Date: 7th May 1952
Meets at: Princes Ave, Caerphilly CF83 1HR
Mother Lodge: Amethyst 4026

Two names were considered for this Lodge, both being variant names for the Bristol Channel, or Severn Sea.
The first name considered was "Sabrina", the old Roman name, but after some discussion this was discarded in favour of the Welsh name "Môr Hafren" meaning The Severn Sea.
The Lodge was Consecrated on 25th June 1952, the first Master being W. Bro. H Gethin Lewis who lived at Penarth in a house overlooking the sea.

The Past Masters Jewel portrays a Welsh Dragon set against wavy lines representing the sea.
This is also reflected in the Lodge Badge.

Historical Preface

To all and every our Right Worshipful Worshipful and Loving Brethren
We Lawrence Roger, Earl of Scarborough Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter
&c. &c. &c. &c. Grand Master of the Most Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons of England
Send Greeting Know ye that we by the authority and under the sanction of the United Grand Lodge of England vested in us for that purpose and at the humble Petition of our Right Trusty and Well Beloved Brethren HENRY GETHIN LEWIS, P.G.D., ARTHUR ELLIS RANDALL-EDMUNDS, WILLIAM ERIC FINCH, GEORGE HAGLEY, EDGAR CHARLES HARRIES, HADYN SHAW, ALBERT ERNEST FINCH and others do hereby constitute the said Brethren into a Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons under the Title or Denomination of  The Môr Hafren Lodge, No. 7194

The above is an extract from the Warrant or Charter of our Lodge issued by the Grand Master on the 7th. May A.L. 5952, A.D. 1952.
The Charter names the seven principal Founder Members, each of which played their part in the formation of our Lodge.
Henry Gethin Lewis was appointed the first Master and also designed the Past Masters Jewel.
The Lodge was originally to be called the SABRINA Lodge but, on the morning of a certain day, whilst looking from his window across the waters of the Severn, he decided upon the Welsh translation of the "Severn Sea", hence the name MÔR HAFREN.
Arthur Ellis Randall-Edmunds was appointed the first Senior Warden, William Eric Finch was appointed the first Junior Warden.
Edgar Charles Harries ; Hadyn Shaw ; and Albert Ernest Finch took office at the first regular ceremony which was held on the 29th. September 1952 at the Masonic Temple, Guildford Crescent, Cardiff.
George Hagley was appointed the first Chaplain of Môr Hafren Lodge and left us a token of his affection for his Brethren, in that he amended the Oxford Ritual of Craft Freemasonry to produce a ritual working specific to Môr Hafren Lodge, as contained herein. This reprint is to preserve our ceremonial workings as he would have wished.
